Working Group on Eruption Source Parameters (IVESPA)

A new working group of the Commission on Tephra Hazard Modelling is focused on creating a standardized, community-maintained online database known as IVESPA (Independent Volcanic Eruption Source Parameter Archive). The efforts are led by Thomas Aubry (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and Sam Engwell (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.), with the British Geological Survey providing resources to create the database and ensure its initial maintenance. It is anticipated that the beta version of the database will be available by early 2021.
The primary aim of IVESPA is to support evaluation and development of eruptive column models, and it is being built with the following specifications:

  • comprehensive data from a wide range of eruption magnitudes and intensities
  • systematic assessment of uncertainties and data quality
  • independent eruption source parameters, which are cross-checked by at least two different members of the working group
Current members of the working group are listed below. Please contact Thomas and Sam for feedback or to get involved.
