{"id":4,"date":"2022-03-04T15:03:15","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T15:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thm.iavceivolcano.org\/about\/"},"modified":"2025-11-24T16:02:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T16:02:18","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/thm.iavceivolcano.org\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>IAVCEI Commission on Tephra Hazard Modelling (THM)<\/strong> was established in 2003 to advance the quantitative understanding of tephra hazards through numerical modelling and field data. Over the past 15+ years, the Commission has organised workshops and symposia, and strengthened collaboration among numerical modellers, field geologists, and operational forecasters from VAACs and volcano observatories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work has produced several notable outcomes, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"block-list\">\n<li>a benchmark dataset for validating volcanic tephra sedimentation models;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>scientific recommendations for collecting the largest clasts in tephra deposits to help determine plume height;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a consensus document from two IUGG\u2013WMO workshops on volcanic ash and aviation (2010, 2013); and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a<strong> <\/strong><em>Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research <\/em>special issue on eruption column model intercomparison.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We are currently leading a Geological Society of London \/ AGU GeoHorizons volume titled <strong><em>Tephra: From Reconstructing Past Volcanic Eruptions to Modelling and Forecasting Future Hazards<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"block-heading\"><strong>Our Goals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Commission works to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"block-list\">\n<li>Calibrate existing tephra-dispersal models<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify improvements that enhance model precision and accuracy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compile comprehensive datasets for model validation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Define a standardised tephra-sampling protocol and quantify uncertainties in eruptive parameters derived from field data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess the feasibility of running models across different computing environments &#8211; from personal computers to parallel clusters and remote servers with internationally accessible web interfaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Present results in a framework that allows new research to be seamlessly integrated into analytical and numerical models for tephra hazard assessment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The IAVCEI Commission on Tephra Hazard Modelling (THM) was established in 2003 to advance the quantitative understanding of tephra hazards through numerical modelling and field data.
